Following are tips to consider:
Put together a "job description" for your project. Outline the work that you want done and your expectations. Do you expect the contractor to move furniture or trim shrubs near the house? Will there be other workers on the job-site while the painting is happening? How many colors will you be using. Providing these details will relieve confusion and give you more comparable bids.
Insist on doing a job "walk-through" with each contractor you are seeking a bid from. Ask questions about how they would handle different preparation issues. Try to gauge their level of experience with jobs like yours. Ask for references of similar jobs that they have done. Ask about the products that they would use and why. They should be comfortable sharing this information with you. You will gain insight as to the kind of work that each person does and their personality. This information will help you later when you are comparing prices.
Ask each contractor how long they think the job will take. How many employees will work on your job? Will the contractor be on-site during the job? When could they start?
Sometimes choosing a color scheme is hard. Ask the contractor if their bid includes doing color samples for you on the house.
You should talk to at least 3 contractors and get at least 3 bids for your painting project. Let each contactor know that you are seeking multiple bids. Stress that while price is an important factor, it is not the only factor.
